It feels like only yesterday that The Game Awards revealed that Final Fantasy VII villain Sephiroth would be joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Final Fantasy series is a  long-running one, giving us memorable villains like Exdeath, Golbez and Ultimecia. However, one villain repeatedly makes the top of the list: Kefka Palazzo from Final Fantasy VI. In terms of villains from this series, Sephiroth isn't really anything too special when it comes to a game like Smash Bros., and in that sense, Kefka truly belongs in his place.

When players look at the character archetypes already present in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there are already several characters that use swords. From Link to characters like Marth and Byleth, and even to Cloud and Sephiroth himself, characters with blades are well covered in the series and could use with a bit more variety. Kefka presents a character type that is lacking in representation: hand-to-hand magic users. Like Zelda, Kefka fights using his spells and a close-up combat style, as shown in the Dissidia games. Given his history, godly powers and powerful magic, Kefka fits right into a character type players could certainly use more of in the game.

Kefka is also from a game that could use the spotlight a bit more than Cloud and Sephiroth's. While no gaming fan will argue that Final Fantasy VII isn't a memorable game, it's had numerous chances to shine, including the recent Final Fantasy VII Remake. It's safe to say that Sephiroth has had numerous chances to shine over the years, where Kefka and Final Fantasy VI can only boast a few ports. VI is considered one of the greatest games of all time and is more than worthy of having that representation in a game like Smash Bros.

There's also the incredible, underappreciated music that Kefka could bring with him. The music in both Final Fantasy VI and VII is well known, but VII already has a ton of exposure. Comparatively, Final Fantasy VI is mostly more known and appreciated by older fans of the series. Putting Kefka in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would bring with it music pieces like "Terra's Theme" and "Decisive Battle." It would also show players the masterpiece of a song that is "Dancing Mad," Kefka's final boss song; doing so may even inspire more interest in that game and series.

Kefka himself would have a much more interesting moveset than Sephiroth does. As shown by Sakurai himself during a presentation, Sephiroth is a sword-based character with a few magical attacks thrown in. On the other hand, Kefka is a character who fights not only close-quarters but also primarily with magic, much more so than Sephiroth. Kefka used his deadly magic to almost destroy the world on a whim; because the world he comes from has powerful magic users called Espers (like Terra), his own magic is incredibly powerful and would lead to devastating attacks for a game like Smash Bros. Again shown by the Dissidia titles, Kefka would also be an eclectic fighter, with the potential for a crazy move list.

Super Smash Bros. is a game series that always tries to get new fans to join in and experience characters they may not know, and the latest entry is no different. DLC announcements for the game always bring out wild guessing and hype and always draw more eyes to the character's series, especially the third party characters. In so many ways, Kefka and Final Fantasy VI are more deserving of this roster spot than someone like Sephiroth. From fighting style to music to exposure, these reasons show why Kefka would be a better choice over Sephiroth.
