Forest Whitaker's days of playing "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's" Rebel freedom fighter Saw Gerrera aren't over. The Academy Award-winning actor will reprise his role as the voice for the character in Season Two of the animated series "Star Wars Rebels."
"It's an incredible honor to have Forest Whitaker play Saw in 'Rebels'," said executive producer Dave Filoni. "Forest did a great job at capturing Saw in a way that is a bit mad, a bit crazed, a bit afraid, but also a bit sympathetic. He sees something coming, but no one will take action before it's too late."
Gerrera will appear in the two-part episode titled "Star Wars Rebels: Ghosts of Geonosis, Parts One and Two." He was first introduced in the animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" before making the leap to live-action in "Rogue One." Both "Clone Wars" and "Rebels" take place before the events of "Rogue One."
A new featurette teases Gerrera in "Rebels" along with a look back at his history in "Clone Wars" as the original Rebel and his involvement in the beginning of what would become the Rebel Alliance.
Voiced by Andrew Kishino, the character debuted in the 2012 “Clone Wars” episode “A War on Two Fronts,” where he was a leader of the Onderon rebels in the fight against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. His arc played out over the subsequent three Season Five episodes.
In “Rogue One,” Whitaker’s Gerrera is the leader of an extremist faction of the Rebel Alliance on Jedha, and serves as mentor and surrogate father to Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" also Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed and Jiang Wen. "Star Wars Rebels: Ghosts of Geonosis, Parts One and Two" air Saturday, January 7 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on Disney XD.
