Food Wars is full of all sorts of amazing dishes that make our mouths water. The series is full of talented culinary students using innovative means to win challenges and to come up with new and exciting kinds of food to eat.

Soma is the main character of the series, so there are of course more dishes from him than from the other students. While some of them seem to die for, others feel like they didn’t quite feel like they made the grade. Here are five of Soma’s best dishes, as well as five of his worst.

10 Best: Curry Risotto Omurice

Rice omelettes are always a thing in Japanese cuisine that seems utterly delicious, but this version seems to class up the classic breakfast food and make it sound even tastier. Using risotto rice instead of traditional rice makes it into a creamier dish, and adding curry powder to the whole thing is a brilliant move that would make it spicy and flavorful without changing it so much that it doesn’t seem like the same dish.

9 Worst: Apple Risotto

This dish sounds okay, but it actually lost him one of his many cooking matches against his dad, who beat him by making a simple vegetarian ramen.

Honestly, in most cases, the worst dishes also seem like they’re probably tasty, and this apple risotto is no different in that regard, with risotto and apples cooked in apple juice. It seems like a sweet and refreshing breakfast dish, but it’s honestly just not very interesting compared to some of his other creations.

8 Best: Evolved Nori Bento

This is such a fun and creative version of a bento box and is one of the points in the series where Soma’s cleverness seemed to actually rival everyone else’s. While competing against Alice, he uses a fancy bento box as inspiration for what he might put inside it instead of making whatever he made fit inside the bento box. He also made use of molecular gastronomy in this one, using Alice’s own specialty against her.

7 Worst: Mini Souffle Omelet

Soma makes a lot of dishes with eggs. They’re one of his go-to ingredients, and they almost always work with whatever he’s trying to pull off. However, when trying to come up with a specialty dish that would work at a hotel buffet, Soma really goofs up with the souffle omelet.

It isn’t as interesting as some of the other dishes on display, including Erina’s eggs benedict, which is right next to his souffles, and the souffles also fall before people can get to them. He ends up wasting a ton of food before finally figuring out he should be making them as people ask for them.

6 Best: Hujiao Bing

For the Moon Festival, Soma decides to go with making hujiao bing, which are pepper buns cooked while stuck to the inside of a clay oven. These buns look super tasty as people begin to eat them, with a hot filling that’s probably really comforting when it’s cold outside. Plus, Soma decided to try something totally different than Terunori’s mapo doufu, which makes it special. Soma didn’t try to copy his cuisine the way he often does in a battle, instead trying something totally new.

5 Worst: Charcoal Grilled Venison Round Steak With Chestnut Sauce

This too seems like a pretty decadent high-quality meal that someone could probably find in a high-end restaurant. But, because of that, it doesn’t feel particularly interesting.

Compared to some of the novel ideas Soma has had for so many of his dishes, a venison steak with chestnut sauce sounds pretty by the books. The characters in the show agree, and he loses the duel in which he makes this dish.

4 Best: Quail Stuffed With Risotto And Eggs: Brazen Youngster Style

Some of the most fun dishes that Soma makes are the ones that combine traditional western cuisines with traditional Japanese cuisines, and this dish is one of the top dishes of this kind. Soma goes back to his favorite ingredient, the egg, and makes an egg and rice dish, but he adds a western twist to it by using risotto rice and by stuffing the rice and egg into a quail. It seems like a juicy, hot meal that has so many flavors going on and is good enough to have made it onto the menu of a top French restaurant.

3 Worst: Ojiya-Style Pacific Saury Takikomi Gohan

The fish dishes are always the ones that look the least interesting, and this one is probably the worst one that Soma makes.

It uses pacific saury, which is the theme of the Autumn Election finals, and, because he’s not able to find good quality fish for the competition, he creates a dish with the fish pickled in rice bran. It seems pretty underwhelming compared to the other two dishes in the finals, and it’s no wonder he loses the competition.

2 Best: Roast Pork, Just Kidding

Gotcha Pork Roast, Food Wars

This is the earliest example of Soma’s innovative cooking that is shown in the series. When a building developer is hounding the Yukihira Diner to sell so they can build a high-rise in its location, Soma suggests that if he can make her something delicious, she has to stop bothering them.

He makes her a meat and potatoes dish that looks like roast pork but is really strips of bacon wrapped around potatoes. It looks amazing, and, despite not being able to tell what it smells like through a television set, it seems like it would pass muster there too. This dish really sets the stage for the rest of the series.

1 Worst: Grilled Squid Tentacles Dressed In Peanut Butter

Of course, one of the worst entries on this list had to be the disgusting food Soma is constantly making his friends try to eat. It’s a source of fun for Soma, who tries to think up the grossest combinations of flavors and then forces them on his friends, who always find them disgusting and a little traumatizing. Squid tentacles dripping with peanut butter sounds pretty awful, and it’s pretty unimaginable that the people having to eat it don’t feel exactly the same way.
