Follow the Path – William Stryker and Lady Deathstrike

In this feature I spotlight changes made to comic book characters that are based on outside media, as well as characters who entirely came from outside media. I’m sure you can think of other examples, so feel free to e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com if you want to suggest some other examples for future installments.

Today, based on a suggestion from reader Sam R., we take a look at how the Marvel Universe adapted to fit in the plot of the second X-Men film…

Okay, so in the classic graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills (by Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson), the X-Men are being besieged by the evil Reverend William Stryker. Here is his origin…

In the end, Stryker is shown to be a jerk in front of everyone…

Meanwhile, Lady Deathstrike debuted in a much different form in the pages of Daredevil before coming over to Alpha Flight, where she was now having a mad on for Wolverine (I pointed out here how nonsensical her motivations for hating Wolverine were), leading to her even becoming a cyborg to take Wolverine down…

By the end of Uncanny X-Men #205, Chris Claremont and Barry Windsor-Smith at least sell that she’s really obsessed with Wolverine…

Okay, so now in X2, the second X-Men film, Colonel William Stryker is a government operative who has the keys to Wolverine’s past and plans to commit genocide on the mutant population…

He has a mutant son himself…

And his top agent is Lady Deathstrike…

So how did the comics change to reflect X2? Go to the next page to find out!
