Flashpoint Beyond writer Geoff Johns said the series will have some major repercussions for the Justice Society of America and other DC Universe characters.
In a CBR exclusive interview, Johns spoke about Flashpoint Beyond and what kind of impact the series will have on the greater DC Universe. When asked if any crossovers will come out of Flashpoint Beyond or if it will be a self-contained series, Johns said that the series falls into both camps. "It's a self-contained story that affects a lot of characters moving forward in the DC universe," he said. "It's self-contained (like Sinestro Corps was back when I did that) and affects the entire DC Universe. This event specifically affects members of the Justice Society, particularly the ones who are both from the past and the future. Flashpoint Beyond affects time and all things related to time. The story becomes very character-based by the time it comes to an end, and it spills out into several things that we can't talk about just yet."
Flashpoint Beyond launched in April from DC with Flashpoint Beyond #0. The series serves as a sequel to the 2011 crossover story arc in which Flash/Barry Allen finds himself in a universe he doesn't recognize. In this universe, Bruce Wayne is dead and Bruce's father, Thomas, has instead become the Dark Knight of Gotham. Other twists within Flashpoint see Captain Cold as Central City's greatest hero, a war brewing between Wonder Woman/the Amazons and Aquaman/the Atlantians and more.
While Flash and Thomas Wayne thought they took the necessary steps to reset the timeline at the end of Flashpoint, Flashpoint Beyond sees Thomas reawaken in a world he believed had disappeared. Flashpoint Beyond #0 sees him grapple with this realization and attempt to turn to Barry for help. Barry, however, has no recollection of Thomas and is then killed during an incident involving a lightning strike and a mysterious harpoon. Flashpoint Beyond #1 contained another major twist when Wonder Woman stabs and kills Aquaman with his own trident.
How Flashpoint Beyond further impacts the Justice Society of America, the first team of superheroes to appear in comics that debuted in 1940's All Star Comics #3, remains to be seen in future Flashpoint Beyond issues. Flashpoint Beyond #2 -- which comes from Johns, Jeremy Adams, Tim Sheridan, Xermanico and Romulo Fajardo Jr., with cover art by Mitch Gerads and variant cover art by Brad Anderson and Jason Fabok -- releases on June 7 from DC.
