In the Season 3 finale of The Flash, Barry Allen sacrificed himself by entering the Speed Force to help stabilize the prison created within it. Nevertheless, it was a foregone conclusion he'd return when the fourth season kicks off Oct. 10 with the appropriately titled "The Flash Reborn," but with a slight twist.

The newly released synopsis for the Season 4 premiere teases a bold move by Cisco that helps to release the hero from his Speed Force prison, with the caveat that "the Barry that comes out of isn't the same Barry that went in." In July, The Flash star Grant Gustin discussed how Barry would be affected by the Speed Force, noting  the physical and emotional weight of the experience would certainly take a toll.

Here's the synopsis for "The Flash Reborn":

COMING HOME — With Barry (Grant Gustin) in the speed force, Iris (Candice Patton), Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale), Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and Vibe (Carlos Valdes) have taken over protecting Central City. However, when a powerful armored villain threatens to level the city if The Flash doesn’t appear, Cisco makes a risky decision to break Barry out of the speed force. However, the Barry that comes out isn’t the same Barry that went in. Glen Winter directed the episode with story by Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Todd Helbing & Eric Wallace (#401). Original airdate 10/10/2017.
