After a medical leave of absence, Jesse L. Martin will return to The Flash Season 5 as Detective Joe West.

According to TVLine, Martin will be back for episode 15, five episodes after the series returns to The CW next week with episode 10 as its midseason premiere. He last appeared in "News Flash," the season's fourth episode.

“There’s an explanation, and then there’s another sort of thing down the line that will give more explanation as to why [Joe] was gone for so long,” showrunner Todd Helbing explained.

Martin stepped away from the role in October due to a back injury he suffered during the show's summer hiatus. In his Season 5 appearances to date, he was seated for almost every scene due to his injury. Despite this, he has taken an active role; in his previous Season 5 appearances, Joe West co-parented his newborn daughter Jenna with Cecile, offered Barry and Iris plenty of advice and was even held hostage by antagonist Cicada.

Returning Tuesday, January 15, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanaugh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet, Hartley Sawyer and Jessica Parker Kennedy.
