Grant Gustin revealed Season 6 of The Flash will have a different cliffhanger ending, as the show returns from a five-week hiatus.

"There was going to be a big Thawne cliffhanger at the end of what this season would have been, but that's not going to be the cliffhanger we get," Gustin told TVLine. He noted that Episode 619, titled "Success Is Assured," will serve as the season finale. The evil speedster Eobard Thawne unexpectedly returned after the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover and possessed his counterpart Nash Wells before Team Flash forced him out.

"[S]o we're going to have a different cliffhanger than originally planned. But the cliffhanger at the end of 619 does serve as a pretty good finale," Gustin added.

Team Flash had been working on its own version of the Speed Force to counter Thawne, and Gustin said the effort is more difficult than anticipated. "And when they eventually do find a way to get it to work, it comes with a pretty big sacrifice for the team," he said.

Warner Bros. stopped production on The Flash and several other shows because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in March, which meant three episodes will not be filmed this season. The scenes described by Gustin may still happen, but not as a season finale, since the coronavirus forced an early shutdown of filming.

Airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet and Hartley Sawyer.
