The newest adaptation of Flash Gordon has found a director.

Julius Avery, whose horror film Overlord is set to premiere Nov. 9, has been tapped by Fox to write and direct the newest take on Flash Gordon. The film will be produced by Matthew Vaughn (Kingsmen: The Golden Circle), who previously was slated to direct it as well.

Deadline reports Avery, who grew up as a fan of the Flash Gordon comic series, pitched his version of the story to Fox and the studio loved it. Centering around a man from Earth and his companions as they travel to the alien world of Mongo to confront the nefarious Ming the Merciless, the comic was famously adapted into a series of films in the 1930’s.

These serials became part of the inspiration for Star Wars, with George Lucas famously only making the original Star Wars film after he failed to acquire the rights to Flash Gordon and his adventures. The character was revived in the 1980 Flash Gordon film, which has gone on to become a cult favorite.

Directed by Julius Avery, Overlord stars Jovan Adepo, John Magno, Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, Pilou Asbaek, Jacob Anderson and Iain De Caestecker. The film hits theater Nov. 9.
