WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #759, by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Scott Kolins, Jordi Tarragona, Arif Prianto, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, on sale now.

As the Flash Family races to its final showdown with the Reverse Flash, Eobard Thawne's greatest scheme has finally come to pass, with the far-future villain having taken complete control of Barry Allen's body. With most of the DC Universe unaware of the swap and Thawne's Legion of Zoom waiting in the wings to continue to terrorize Central City, the Scarlet Speedster's legacy has been usurped by his greatest enemy.

And while Thawne takes out Barry's body for a cross-country test run in The Flash #759, Barry's consciousness finds himself trapped within the Speed Force where he is confronted by two familiar faces from his past: Max Mercury and Jesse Quick.

Flash Jesse Quick Max Mercury

Adrift in the extra-dimensional realm, Barry is menaced by the Speed Force guru and high-speed daughter of Golden Age superhero Johnny Quick, only both figures have taken on the physical appearance of ravenous monsters. Both characters quickly revert to their normal forms as they approach Barry and reveal that their horrific transformation isn't the effects of being trapped in the Speed Force but rather Barry's own mental projections of both of them. Ever since the start of the DC Rebirth era, Barry had been guilty for his role in rewriting reality during Flashpoint, even after learning of Doctor Manhattan's involvement during Doomsday Clock. This deep sense of self-torment had resulted in Max and Jesse's initial nightmarish appearances.

As the speedster who discovered and explored the Speed Force in the 1830s, Max Mercury is the hero best suited to help Barry find a way out of the otherworldly realm and regain control of his body -- Thawne himself observes that he is still having trouble maintaining control back in the real world. Max has had his own experience with being trapped in the Speed Force, emerging to help Wally West battle a resurgent Thawne the first time the villain impersonated Barry in The Flash #79. Max would escape the Speed Force to help the Flash Family against Thawne in The Flash: Rebirth only to be drawn back in during Flashpoint.

The Flash 759

Jesse learned the Speed Force formula from her father Johnny before becoming a different kind of superhero as Liberty Belle on the Justice Society of America, alongside her husband Rick Tyler, the second Hourman. Jesse resumed her speedster identity battling against Thawne during The Flash: Rebirth to honor her father who had been murdered inside the Speed Force by the supervillain. Barry asks Jesse if Johnny is similarly in the Speed Force with both her and Max but, because Johnny died before the events of Flashpoint, he was not preserved inside the Speed Force like her, Max and Wally had been during the New 52 era.

Reunited with Max Mercury and Jesse Quick, Barry Allen is joined by two speedster superheroes with their own grudge against the Reverse-Flash, both last seen confronting him just before the events of Flashpoint and poised for the DC Rebirth return. In Max, Barry may have discovered the key regaining control of his own body and driving Eobard Thawne out, while also serving as a tether to bring Max and Jesse out of the Speed Force with him. With Impulse, Kid-Flash and Avery rallying their own resistance against the Reverse Flash and the Legion of Zoom, the entire Flash Family is taking shape for the final battle as Barry gathers his own reinforcements from inside the Speed Force.
