The photo is an homage to the cover co-creator and writer Felipe Smith drew for the character's first issue in 2014, which you can check out below. "S.H.I.E.L.D.'s" Ghost Rider also draws inspiration from Smith's design, with a sleek metallic look and hood scoop in the character's forehead.

Past incarnations of Ghost Rider -- including Johnny Blaze -- have also boasted a flaming skulls, but theirs take after a standard skull. Reyes' Ghost Rider, who is attached to the spirit inhabiting his Dodge Charger, has a more mechanical look.

According to star Chloe Bennet, Season 4 will deal with themes that are closely tied to Reyes' Ghost Rider: vengeance, penance, the line between good and evil, and determining who deserves to die. “These massive themes [are] being threaded throughout our season,” she explained.

Starring Clark Gregg, Chloe Bennet and Ming-Na Wen, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” returns Tuesday, September 20 at 10 pm EST on ABC.
