With the end of 2015 fast approaching, the July 28, 2017 date Marvel Studios has earmarked for its currently untitled "Spider-Man" film reboot no longer seems quite so far away. So far we know href="https://www.comicbookresources.com/tag/tom+holland">Tom Holland is starring as Peter Parker, Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May and Jon Watts is directing from a script by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein. And based on Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige's comments during an "Ant-Man" press junket, we know the film's central villain will not have appeared in any of the previous "Spider-Man" films. According to Feige, Marvel is "interested in seeing villains we haven't seen before." Sorry, Green Goblin fans, you're not getting yet another take on Norman Osborn and his progeny. That also cancels out Doctor Octopus, Venom, Sandman, the Lizard and Electro.

Lucky for Marvel and Spidey fans, the wall-crawler has one of the deepest rogues galleries in all of comics with plenty of villains who remain completely untouched on film. But who is the right villain for Tom Holland to test his mettle against in his first full outing as Spider-Man (not counting his initial Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in "Captain America: Civil War")? Spidey's storied publication history is filled with a deep roster of evil masterminds, killers, crooks and creeps. Marvel Studios and the filmmakers will certainly have a hard time making the final decision, though not that hard considering how many options they can sort through. To make things just a bit easier, we've worked up a list of some villains who could be perfect to present the next Spider-Man with a challenge worthy of his inclusion in the MCU.

Kraven the Hunter

It's hard to believe Kraven the Hunter has yet to make his cinematic debut. Though teased in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," no movie has yet managed to wrangle Kraven. Considering Marvel Studios' track record balancing pathos with humor, it's easy to imagine them setting their sights on the seminal Spider-Man story "Kraven's Last Hunt" by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck. While Kraven has been reimagined in the comics before, it's not a stretch to think of Marvel making their big screen take on the character a reality star or internet celebrity who could quickly become one seriously intriguing villain to face off against the youthful Tom Holland's Peter Parker.

Kingpin

There's also a very good chance Marvel has already introduced Peter Parker's first cinematic adversary, albeit not in one of their films. Vincent D'Onofrio delivered an absolute tour de force performance as Wilson Fisk in Marvel's "Daredevil" Netflix series, and as many comic fans already know Fisk started his comic book life as a Spider-Man villain. It's no stretch to imagine the Kingpin being the new Spidey's first big screen foe. The inclusion of Wilson Fisk could bind "Spider-Man" to Marvel's Netflix shows and further establish the legitimacy of and connections to the gritty underworld of "Daredevil" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While previous Spider-Man movie villains have tended to be larger-than-life, powered antagonists, using someone whose most formidable power is his cunning and intelligence could lead to a very different type of action film, something Marvel may have had in mind when they worked out the deal with Sony to take control of the franchise.

Mysterio

Another classic Spidey villain that has yet to arrive on the big screen, Mysterio has everything a villain needs to make a major celluloid splash: stunning visual powers, dark and twisted motives and a stunningly original look. A man obsessed with fame, Quentin Beck and his reality warping gadgets have always been a tremendous test for the wits and powers of Peter Parker as this master of illusion has attempted to pull the wool over Spidey's eyes for decades -- but never on film. By having the new Spidey go against Mysterio, Marvel could establish this Peter Parker as a thinking man's hero as he tries to outwit the illusions and machinations of one of his most eerie and cinematic foes.

Morlun

Across two different iterations and five films, previous Spider-Man films have all borrowed villains from the Silver Age Lee/Ditko/Romita era. If they opt to go for a more contemporary route, they could do a lot worse than Morlun, a totemic representation of Spider powers gone wrong and a vampiric killer that feeds on Spider powers. Did we mention he's also one of the toughest foes Peter Parker ever faced? Considering Morlun would be very much at home in a horror flick, his presence would immediately set the new Spider-Man film apart from past incarnations while also providing a perfect counterpoint to the very human and very humorous Peter Parker Marvel is promising this time around.

Chameleon

The Chameleon is nearly as old as Spidey himself, making his debut in the pages of "Amazing Spider-Man" #1. In other words, it's past time this face-changing villain got some film love. The Chameleon's ability to appear as anyone he wishes would be a great test for the new Spider-Man. Having an espionage themed villain could be a great way for Marvel to continue its trademark cross-film synergy by providing an entry point for Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. into this new Spidey's world. Or perhaps Marvel could package the Chameleon with his Russian comrade Kraven and have two villainous debuts to truly challenge the latest take on your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
