After being stuck in development purgatory, the Five Nights at Freddy's planned cinematic adaptation is finally moving forward with a projected start date to begin principal photography.Franchise creator Scott Cawthon recently announced this production updated within a Reddit post.RELATED: How Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery Uses AR To Reinvent Horror

Cawthon detailed the past five years of scrapped scripts and changing film studios that the planned adaptation experienced. After listing the numerous screenplays written and discarded, Cawthon announced he approved the latest script. Filming on the adaptation will begin in Spring 2021. The film's production studio, Blumhouse Productions, also confirmed this news on Twitter.

A film adaptation of the horror game franchise was optioned by Warner Bros. in 2015. It moved to Blumhouse in 2017. The filming start date follows previous comments made by Blumhouse founder Jason Blum that an adaptation was still in active development. No screenwriter, director or casting has been announced at this time.

Five Nights at Freddy's was created by Cawthon in 2014, with animatronics at a popular family entertainment center coming to murderous life each night to stalk the overnight security guard. The game spawned a line of sequels, spinoffs and merchandising, with the latest video game installment Security Breach coming to the PlayStation 5 in 2021.
