Today, the first trailer for the next MCU epic Captain Marvel made its debut showcasing the titular superhero in cosmic action. Included on both the trailer and the first official poster for the film is what is presumably the final logo for the film, a polished look sporting a bold, red typeface with gold borders and a cosmic shimmer.

The poster even doubles down on the sci-fi elements for the logo, adding the familiar starburst associated with the character behind the typeface, illuminating the text. Visually impressive, this final design is considerably more inspired than previous attempts to develop a logo for the upcoming MCU film.

When the film was first officially announced in October 2014, the studio was fresh off the success of the nostalgia-tinged success of its most recent release, Guardians of the Galaxy. A lush celebration of '80s pop culture with its throwback visual sensibilities and chart-topping soundtrack, the sci-fi film was part of a wave of films and television that unabashedly embraced the possibilities of its retro influences right down to its branding.

As the film takes place over 20 years prior to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's relative present, Captain Marvel was always going to have a bit of a retro feel thanks to its '90s setting. Taking this into account, the original logo for the film used the same logo as the comic, with a weathered, Star Wars-inspired typeface that was perfectly in line with the nostalgic overtones present in Guardians of the Galaxy.

After pushing the film's release date back in early 2015, as well as removing references to the character in that year's Avengers: Age of Ultron, the search for a star and director began. Nearly a year after casting Brie Larson in the title role, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were hired in April 2017, with the revised script confirming the '90s setting and principal photography beginning the following February. Upon the start of filming, a redesigned version of logo was unveiled.

This logo was a significant shift from the original. The throwback typeface had been done away with completely, resulting in a much bolder design. The yellow coloration was replaced with a bold red more associated with the character, along with a metallic gold border for the text.

The final logo isn't a drastic departure from the February revision, though it sports deeper hues and more dynamic visual effects around the lettering. From an '80s-tinged throwback to a bold, cosmically dynamic design, Captain Marvel's logo has visibly changed in the four years since its initial announcement. With six months until the film's wide release, it is likely that this will be the final design for the film though additional, minimal flourishes are certainly possible.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives on March 8, 2019.
