First Stills, Plus High-Res Cast Photo, From X-Men: First Class

The appearance online yesterday of the first cast photo from X-Men: First Class was quickly followed by a round of take-down notices from 20th Century Fox, leading many websites — including Comic Book Resources and Spinoff — to remove the image.

But this afternoon, uploaded a larger, better version to accompany its interview with star January Jones, suggesting that either MSN Entertainment released the photo too soon — it initially appeared as part of its Q&A with Michael Fassbender — or the studio was displeased with the quality of the image. (Indeed, this new incarnation is high resolution and provides a better look at Nicholas Hoult’s Beast, who had been little more than a blue smudge peering out of the darkness.) In any case, we’re running the updated photo now.

Pictured above, from left, are: Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, January Jones as Emma Frost, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havok, Zoe Kravitz as Angel, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and James McAvoy as Charles Xavier.

Of the three cast interviews making the rounds, Moviefone’s Q&A with Kevin Bacon, who plays Sebastian Shaw, is probably the most revealing, with word of “a really, really super cool scene in a hall of mirrors,” Shaw’s submarine and other story elements.

“When you see them become what we know of as the X-Men, to me, that’s really cool,” Bacon said. “The visual stuff, I can’t say, until I’ve seen the effects. But from a plot standpoint, watching the creation of that kind of elite squad and yet they’re all in this college dorm room kind of atmosphere, where there’s romances and drunken parties and people become friends and then they have a falling out. I think all that stuff is going to be really cool.”

Update: Just as I was posting this, Hero Complex unveiled an on-set interview with star James McAvoy, director Matthew Vaughn and producer Bryan Singer, plus three new stills from X-Men: First Class.

Here’s the official description for the film, which opens on June 3.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-MEN saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.
