USA Today has debuted the first official images from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of Disney's blockbuster fantasy-adventure franchise.
The first still depicts Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and his wicked ex-flame Angelica (Penelope Cruz) waist-deep in what I presume is a Florida swamp. C0-screenwriter Terry Rossio describes Angelica, the daughter of Blackbeard (Ian McShane), as Jack's "kindred spirit who is a con artist at heart as well."
"She's not only a romantic interest," he says, "but an equal and effective adversary."
The second photo shows Jack being dragged by Royal Guards to audience with King George II (Richard Griffiths), who wants him to find the Fountain of Youth -- accompanied by none other than Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).
On his way, Jack will encounter a friendly mermaid (Astrid Berges-Frisbey), a quality that may be rare among her kind. "These mermaids are ferocious," director Jerry Bruckheimer tells the newspaper during shooting. "On the surface they're beautiful, but once you get them underwater, they turn pretty scary."
Directed by Rob Marshall, the film also features Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs and Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens in 3D on May 20.
Update: Not to be outdone, Yahoo! Movies has rolled out four additional images, including one that provides a first glimpse of Ian McShane as Blackbeard:
