Earlier today a terrible scan from Premiere magazine of Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes made the rounds online. But now, courtesy of Hero Complex, comes our first official look at the star-spangled sidekick from Captain America: The First Avenger. Wait, make that star-spangled partner.
According to director Joe Johnston, the 27-year-old Stan, best known for NBC’s short-lived Kings and, more recently, Black Swan, “brought something really interesting and slightly on the dark side” to the character.
“You know, he was originally up for the lead, for the Steve Rogers role, but he didn’t have quite the same earnest, I-want-to-fight-for-my-country aura that Chris [Evans] has for this role,” Johnston tells the Los Angeles Times blog. “Sebastian has a little bit of the bad boy, he’s a little bit of the James Dean type and that goes somewhat counter to the general perception of Steve Rogers. He wasn’t quite right for Captain America, but I think he’s perfect for Bucky because, really, he can have a little bit of that dark side.”
The first trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger will debut Sunday during the Super Bowl telecast. The movie, which also stars Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Dominic Cooper, Neal McDonough and Tommy Lee Jones, opens on July 22.
