All good films need a good villain. Neill Blomkamp turned to Sharlto Copley, star of his breakout movie District 9, to fill that role in his next sci-fi epic Elysium. Blomkamp talked to Empire and also showed off the first image of Copley from the film. Here's a reminder of the plot:
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government offcial, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Copley plays Kruger, Secretary Rhodes' personal soldier, whom she sends after Max and his fellow revolutionaries. Blomkamp explained how he borrowed from real life to create the Kruger character: "I combined references from a very infamous South African military battalion called 32 Battalion, that fought in the Border Wars in South Africa, and a stereotype of character that you get in the south of Johannesburg, where the guys are a little bit more comfortable with violence!"
Elysium opens Aug. 9, 2013.
