With the release of Gareth Edwards' "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" inching ever closer, we get a good look at a new Rebel ship: the U-wing.

This isn't simply another letter in the Rebel fleet alphabet, however. Appearing on "The Star Wars Show," Lucasfilm Story Group Creative Executive Matt Martin revealed the U-wing is a "troop transport and gun ship, so it's there to bring in Rebel troops through heavy fire zones and get out as quickly as possible."

But it's not that much different from ships like the X-wing, either. The Incom UT-60D, as the U-wing is officially known, sports "S-Foils" that can be locked in a different position, much like the classic X-wing, depending upon the ship's engagement.

Martin noted this isn't the first time the U-wing has been seen publicly, as the ship was depicted offloading troops in early concept art revealed last year at "Star Wars" Celebration in Anaheim, California. And, even more recently, the interior of the new ship can be spotted in the production stills from the "Rogue One" sizzle reel that debuted last month at "Star Wars" Celebration in London,. Remember that Rocket Raccoon-looking character hanging out by the gunner door? Well, that turns out to be the interior of the U-wing.

Arriving Dec. 16, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Jonathan Aris.
