The first poster for Pixar's "Cars 3" has surfaced on Twitter, and just like the recently released trailer, it's unexpectedly gritty. None of the cars' characteristic, cartoony faces are in view. The poster just shows the sparking undercarriage of Lightning McQueen in mid-crash with the tagline, "From this moment, everything will change."

Director Brian Fee has previously indicated that Lightning McQueen, the red race car from "Cars" and "Cars 2" voiced by Owen Wilson, would be going through some tough times. “Think of where he’d be in his career now in real time,” Fee said to ScreenRant in a May 2016 interview. “[McQueen] is not an old man, but he’s one of the older cars on the circuit with new rookies coming in. People start to wonder and ask when he might retire.”

He continued: “Everyone can relate to feeling like someone is at their heels, that they might be a little outdated in something they used to be very good at, feeling an expiration date. And knowing you need someone to help you get a second chance.” Perhaps future posters will highlight that more optimistic "second chance" portion of the plot, rather than the grim crash scenes we've seen so far -- or maybe "Cars 3" really will depart drastically from the tone of its predecessors.

Written by Robert L. Baird and Daniel Gerson, and starring the voice talents of Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin and more, “Cars 3” arrives in theaters on June 16th, 2017.
