While Firefly may be over on television and the big screen, Joss Whedon's beloved sci-fi franchise continues to thrive in comic books with the special one-shot Firefly: The Outlaw Ma Reynolds #1 from BOOM! Studios.

True to its title, the upcoming issue will introduce fans to longtime protagonist Captain Malcolm Reynolds' mother Maude, who appears to be every inch the interplanetary outlaw as her spacefaring son. The issue will be written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Davide Gianfelice and George Kambadais, with colors provided by Joana Lafuente and letters by Jim Campbell. Unlettered preview pages of the issue -- along with covers illustrated by Michael Walsh and Ethan Young -- are below:

Announced in October, the upcoming issue reveals that Maude is the most wanted woman by the Alliance for her outlaw ways. As Mal races to reunite with his mother, he finds himself drawn into the interplanetary hunt, with hijinks sure to ensue.

The cult-favorite television series Firefly, created by Joss Whedon, takes place approximately 500 years in the future and follows the crew of the eponymous ship. The acclaimed series blended sci-fi and western tropes as Mal led his crew across the stars after a bitter loss in a recent civil war to scrap together a gunslinging living. Judging by the preview, Mal's outlaw ways certainly run in the family.
