The Fire Force manga was created by Atsushi Ohkubo, the author behind the iconic dark comedy fantasy series Soul Eater. Okubo's latest and possibly final work premiered on September 2015 in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Set in a world where humanity is rebuilding following a planet-wide burst of flames, the story follows Shinra Kusakabe, a young man with the ability ignite flames from his feet, who joins Special Fire Force Company 8 in order to end attacks by the Infernals, human beings who have spontaneously combusted into fire-spewing monsters.

The manga published its final chapter in February. While Okubo repreatedly stated that he was planning on retiring following the conclusion of the series, the final chapter was published alongside a cryptic statement asking fans to look forward to more work from the acclaimed manga creator. The series has been a commerical and critical success, with a global circulation of over 17.5 million copies. The manga was nominated for the Kodansha Manga Award in 2021.
