The films Finding Nemo and Ratatouille are both considered to be Pixar classics. Despite being completely different stories with unique characters, the setting, and themes, both stories are infinitely entertaining and heartwarming to audiences worldwide.

But even though it is unquestionable that both are masterpieces in their own unique ways, there are some things about the two animated movies that could be compared to determine which of the two is far superior (or inferior) to the other. It's difficult to say for sure, but it's definitely possible to assess their quality relative to the other.

10 Finding Nemo: The Characters

Finding Nemo Pixar

It's unquestionable that most of the characters in both of these movies are quite fleshed-out while others are at least memorable to an extent. And yet, the characters in Finding Nemo are superior for several reasons.

For starters, the multiple main characters in Finding Nemo are simply more intriguing than Ratatouille's. Remy is quite memorable for sure, but Alfredo Linguini is not comparable to Dory. Moreover, the supporting characters like the cooks in the kitchen aren't as interesting as the characters Marlin and Dory meet along the way.

9 Ratatouille: The Protagonist

Remy in the kitchen

Speaking of characters, Ratatouille's protagonist is better than Finding Nemo's. This is partially the result of less focus on one character in the latter movie while Ratatouille always keeps Remy at the forefront.

Though many people still probably think that the rat's name is Ratatouille just like the name of the movie and the dish it refers to, Remy still feels more developed than Marlin. Remy has a dream but lives in a society where nobody understands him. Marlin wants to find his son while also having to realize that he doesn't need to control him all the time.

8 Finding Nemo: The Villains

To continue on the topic of villains, it's worth noting that the villains in Finding Nemo are absolutely magnificent. Ratatouille's story is more concerned with Remy getting his dream, but Marlin and Dory need to overcome many challenges along the way which is why their opponents seem more menacing.

The divers kidnapping Nemo, the seemingly vegetarian sharks, the deep-sea anglerfish, a forest of jellyfish, a group of seagulls, and most importantly Darla - all of these are scary in their own way which makes Finding Nemo such an exciting story.

7 Ratatouille: The Visuals

Pixar is known for its outstanding animation which is evident in both movies, but Ratatouille is still slightly superior in this sense. First of all, it came out four years after Finding Nemo making the technology used for it more advanced.

Finding Nemo had to create realistic-looking water which it did, but Ratatouille's team managed to create an incredible atmosphere by traveling to Paris and studying food. All the dishes, shots of the city, and rat fur look quite real.

6 Finding Nemo: The Setting

The setting is always very important for the story with some locations being particularly crucial for the development of the plot or the characters. In terms of beauty, both movies did a great job, but Finding Nemo's setting is better.

Ratatouille takes place in Paris which anyone can visit in real life while Finding Nemo's underwater locations are much harder to see with one's own eyes. Finding Nemo also features more locations making the scenery more diverse.

5 Ratatouille: The Atmosphere

Like the setting, the atmosphere is crucial for the success of both of these movies. There are some other feature films that do well without creating a particular atmosphere, but almost all Pixar movies heavily rely on creating a certain atmosphere to submerge the audience into.

Frankly, Ratatouille does a better job, perhaps because of having a somewhat calmer story rather than relying on adventure like Finding Nemo. Paris feels like a real city with all the locations, no matter how big or small, looking beautiful.

4 Finding Nemo: Overall Success

When it comes to overall success, Finding Nemo is definitely the winner here. It grossed over $940 million on a $94 million budget (as opposed to Ratatouille's $620.7 million on a $150 million budget).

Both movies won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but Finding Nemo was the first-ever win for Pixar in this category. Finding Nemo also has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 8.69 while Ratatouille has a 96% rating with an average score of 8.47.

3 Ratatouille: The Themes

Most Pixar creations usually have some common themes such as the value of family, overcoming obstacles, and chasing one's dreams. But when it comes to more specific themes, Ratatouille seems to have taken a more unique route than Finding Nemo.

Though it may seem that Ratatouille is about cooking, it's actually about art. Remy goes through the process of discovering his passion and just how hard it can sometimes be to let yourself work on it.

2 Finding Nemo: The Concept

The concept is often something that makes or breaks a movie. To put it simply, it is the hook of the story, it's very beginning, and the reason why the audience would want to stick around to see it unfold.

Though a rat becoming a chef is definitely interesting, a story about a clownfish father looking for his son might just be more entertaining. It's a close call, but Finding Nemo's concept feels fresher.

1 Ratatouille: The Jokes

Undoubtedly, jokes are an important part of a movie that wants to appeal to everyone. Because Pixar's work is enjoyed by people of all ages, it's obvious that their jokes are great.

Finding Nemo has some pretty good ones, indeed. However, Ratatouille is simply more hilarious. Even just by watching everyone react to Remy and then to the whole situation of him pretty much controlling Linguini, it's easy to realize just how funny it all is.
