The animated space opera dramedy Final Space is slated to make its return in early 2021 on Adult Swim. The series was created by Olan Rogers and follows Gary Goodspeed and his alien buddy Mooncake as they traverse the galaxy trying to solve the mystery of the show's title. Along the way, they collect a ragtag group of friends and get into tons of hijinks.

Ahead of next year's Season 3 premiere, here's everything we know about what's to come for Final Space.

Plot

TV The Final Space Squad

While finishing his five year prison sentence for accidentally blowing up 92 ships and a small family-owned Mexican restaurant, Gary Goodspeed befriends a strange alien creature he names Mooncake. Gary teams up with Avocato, a Ventrexian working for Lord Commander who has his son, Little Cato, held prisoner. When they attempt to rescue Little Cato, Avocato is killed, leading Gary and his love interest, Quinn Ergon, to want to get revenge. They are also introduced to Nightfall, who is a future version of Quinn Ergon tasked by Bolo, a Titan imprisoned in Inner Space, to help Gary and the rest of the team stop Lord Commander from opening Final Space.

The end of Final Space Season 1 sees Gary and Quinn return to Earth to gather an antimatter bomb with which they can close the breach. The Lord Commander captures Mooncake and uses him to open the breach further. A Titan reaches through and pulls the entire Earth into Final Space before Quinn sacrifices herself to detonate the bomb and close the breach.

Most Season 1 episodes open with Gary floating in space with debris and dead bodies talking to H.U.E., the ship's A.I., who transferred his consciousness into Gary’s helmet. Each episode, H.U.E. counts down the time until he runs out of oxygen, which culminates in the last episode after the Earth is pulled into Final Space and Gary is all alone. Season 1 ends with Gary out of oxygen, passed out, then getting beamed onto another ship.

In Season 2, Gary is beamed on board Clarence’s ship, who has two adopted children, Fox and Ash. In an attempt to win his freedom from Clarence, Gary and Little Cato must win the Torro Regatta in his new ship, the Crimson Light. During the race, they must help Clarence and his children steal the Nymerian Cube, which turns out to be one of the five dimensional keys which are required to free Bolo from his prison. The rest of the season is the Team Squad going to find the keys and free Bolo. Season 2 ends with Bolo freed and going into Final Space with the rest of the cast.

Season 3 will most likely be Bolo fighting the other Titans, but what part Gary and the Team Squad will play has not been revealed. At the end of Season 2, they have already rescued Quinn, but still need to get out of Final Space.

Based on the Final Space Season 3 teaser poster revealed in October, Team Squad will have to fight their way out of Final Space through tons of zombie Garys. This is mostly likely Invictus' doing, and will occur at the same time as Bolo is dealing with the Titans. One question that needs to be answered: If Quinn survived the explosion in Final Space, why didn’t the other Garys? Did Gary’s dad John Goodspeed also survive?

Release Date

Final Space Season 3 will debut in early 2021 on Adult Swim before releasing internationally on TBS, HBO Max and Netflix. An official release date is still TBA.

Cast

Final Space Season 3 will seemingly feature the entire returning cast from Seasons 1 and 2, including series creator Olan Rogers as Gary Goodspeed, Mooncake and Tribore; Tika Sumpter as Quinn and Nightfall; Ashly Burch as Ash Graven; Steven Yeun as Little Cato; Claudia Black as Sheryl; Tom Kenny as H.U.E.; Fred Armisen as KVN; Ron Funches as Fox; and Jane Lynch as A.V.A.

Recurring cast members who are likely to return include Keith David as Bolo, whom viewers will probably see a lot more in Season 3, as well as Vanessa Marshall as Invictus, whom will also play a bigger role in the upcoming season. David Tennant voiced the Lord Commander in Season 1 and Season 2. It's not out of the realm of possibility for Lord Commander to come back for Season 3, either in flashbacks or as some sort of zombie similar to the zombie Gary’s, so Tennant may also return.
