Among the multitude of next-gen titles covered at the PlayStation 5 September Showcase, the show opened with a reveal for Final Fantasy XVI, the latest entry in Square Enix's iconic franchise. Unfortunately for Xbox Series X buyers, the game will be a console exclusive for the PS5. However, the game will also be available for PC.

The 4 minute Final Fantasy XVI trailer was rather vague, so the nature of the plot is still unclear. However, a decent glimpse into the main conflict has already been offered. There are at least two conflicting kingdoms who possess objects known as crystals. These are powerful objects that hold much importance to both kingdoms, especially in their ability to resist a blight that is seemingly spreading across the land. A dramatic voice says, "The legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough," so it seems the focus will be on somehow destroying these objects or lessening their influence.

As for characters, the protagonist appears to be an unnamed guard sworn to protect the son of an archduke, Joshua. Joshua has magical powers, displaying the ability to transform into a creature called the Phoenix. The significance of this is apparent, but exactly how it will play into the story is unknown. There are many more seemingly key figures who -- like the protagonist -- remain unnamed and serve as members of a court.

Alongside these snippets of story, a fair bit of the game's locations are shown. Unlike its more recent predecessors which took place in more modern settings, Final Fantasy XVI takes place in a high fantasy world complete with castles and lords. While previous entries of the series have incorporated steampunk elements and technology, it is nowhere to be found in this trailer. This may change with later reveals, but for now the game appears to have committed entirely to a sword-and-sorcery fantasy setting.

Gameplay was also included in the trailer, but was rather limited. However, the little combat that was shown appears to have some similarities to the systems found in Final Fantasy XV and VII Remake, with a more hands-on action approach to the series' real-time combat.

As of now, the launch date for Final Fantasy XVI has yet to be announced. Whether the PC version will release simultaneously with the PS5 version is unknown. Final Fantasy XV's PC port took over two years to arrive, so this may also be the case for its successor. More details will be revealed in 2021.
