New details about Final Fantasy XVI's protagonist and story have surfaced online, courtesy of the latest issue of Famitsu magazine. The magazine interviewed both producer Naoki Yoshida and director Hiroshi Takai.Though Famitsu is published entirely in Japanese, a fan translated important bits of text. Twitter user @aitaikimochi's post reads, "The latest Famitsu magazine has some new info on Final Fantasy 16 + new comments from Yoshi-P and Takai! Tidbits: Protagonist IS the one who says (re: Joshua) 'Stop! He's my younger brother!,' Humans cannot live w/o crystals, Staff are working towards completion of the game."RELATED: Final Fantasy XVI Finishes Basic Development and Scenario Production

In the translated lore section, readers found out that the protagonist is a knight who has sworn to protect Joshua, his brother. Humans cannot live in the world without crystals and there has been "strife" over the "Mother Crystal." In addition to being the protagonist's brother, Joshua is a young boy that uses fire to heal wounds he's sustained. In the trailer, Joshua is called "Phoenix."

The Summons Phoenix and Ifrit make up the Final Fantasy XVI logo. As the two clash, the protagonist yells, "Stop, stop it! He's my younger brother!" Though, there are many other Summons besides Phoenix and Ifrit in the game, including Titan and Shiva.

Naoki Yoshida said, "I’m Yoshida, the Producer of Final Fantasy XVI. We started off this project with a small team but were able to gradually gather more talent for this new game. I’m sure you’ve all seen the trailer. How did you like the cutscenes and battle sequences, which were all captured in real-time? The real game will be even better in quality, and we plan to deliver a top-notch gaming experience and story. We have a cohesive development team that is currently advancing toward the completion of the game. The next major announcement will come in 2021, so until then, please imagine all sorts of scenarios while you wait! Please also pay attention to both FFXIV as well as the new FFXVI game! I’ll do my best on both games!"

Meanwhile, Hiroshi Takai's portion reads, "I played Final Fantasy I when I was a student. I also worked on Final Fantasy V as part of the development staff, albeit a minor position. I then took part in the online games Final Fantasy XI as well as Final Fantasy XIV. And now… Final Fantasy XVI! This is the 16th installment of the series, and I was able to work on it from the beginning stages, and we have taken on many challenges. We’re also developing this game for the PlayStation 5. Currently, the staff are giving it their all every day in developing the game. It will still be some time before the game can be in your hands, but I hope that you are all able to wait until then!"

Developed by Square Enix and published by Sony, Final Fantasy XVI will be released for PlayStation 5 and PC at a currently unannounced date.
