Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is getting a deluxe re-release on UHD Blu-ray with a brand new 4K remaster with HDR10 color depth and Dolby Atmos sound.

The Spirits Within was one of the most expensive movies ever made when it originally premiered over over twenty years ago in 2001, and now Final Fantasy fans can see its CG-splendor with new clarity in 4K ultra-HD. In addition to the new 4K edition of the movie, the UHD Blu-ray will also contain two feature-length commentary tracks, an interactive behind-the-scenes making-of documentary, theatrical trailers and more. Sony Pictures' new release will feature a look at The Gray Project, which was one of the CG tests Square created in the lead-up to production to the final movie. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within on 4K UHD Blu-ray will be released on Nov. 16.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was directed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and stars Mulan and Agents of Shield's Ming-Na Wen as Dr. Aki Ross, a scientist who is trying to save what remains of humanity from the deadly, ghost-like alien race known as the Phantoms. The movie also features the voices of Alec Baldwin, Donald Sutherland, Steve Buschemi, Ving Rhames, Peri Gilpin, and James Woods.

While most critics were unkind to Sakaguchi's theatrical debut, the movie was famously lauded by the late film critic Roger Ebert, who praised its technical achievements despite still recognizing its narrative shortcomings. Spirits Within performed poorly at the box office, and its failure to turn a profit during its theatrical run eventually led to the shuttering of Square Soft's short-lived movie production studio in Hawaii and Sakaguchi's eventual departure from the company. Square Soft eventually merged with former rival Japanese video game company Enix in 2003 to form Square Enix. While the initial reception to the movie was cold, the film has found a small but dedicated cult-following who appreciate its aesthetics and themes.

Square would eventually give Final Fantasy movies another shot in 2005 with the release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, a direct-to-DVD CG movie that serves as a direct sequel to one of the most popular entries in the long-running RPG franchise. Advent Children received a much warmer reception from series fans, and the Final Fantasy team once again produced another CG movie, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. Kingsglaive tells a side-story set in the same world as Final Fantasy XV, and was included with certain collector's edition bundles of the game.
