A new Final Fantasy game will be very different from most other entries in the long-running video game franchise.

According to the trailer released to Nintendo's official YouTube account, Chocobo GP will be a cartoony, Mario Kart-style racing game for the Nintendo Switch. Featuring fan-favorite characters like Shiroma, Vivi and Gilgamesh, the game will have players racing on familiar tracks from Final Fantasy and Chocobo, along with special character abilities and Magicities.

The trailer explains that "there's only one requirement to enter this race; your ride must have wheels" and that drifting, which allows players to take turns at a faster pace, will be an important gameplay mechanic.

This is not the first Chocobo-themed racing game to appear in the Final Fantasy franchise; Chocobo Racing was released for the PlayStation 1 in 1999 and was viewed as Square Enix's mediocre attempt to cash in on the popularity of the original Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing. With limited information about Chocobo GP currently available, it is too earlier to tell if this game will bring something new to the well-established kart-racing genre.

Chocobo GP will be an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch and is expected to be released sometime in 2022. More details about the game will likely come from Nintendo and Square Enix in the coming months.
