Final Fantasy's characters come to life with rich backstories and convincing personalities. Given fan's attachment to these characters, they tend to finish many FF titles wanting more. Sadly, the nature of Final Fantasy is that each entry is made to stand alone, disconnected from the events in the other games.

Though all the mainline Final Fantasy games are entirely unique, there is so much more to explore in their individual worlds that could help these games found entire series of their own. 10 Final Fantasy VII Is The Greatest JPRG Of All Time

Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII 7 Remake Rebirth fight with swords.

As one of the greatest RPGs of all time, Final Fantasy VII probably deserves a proper sequel. In Square Enix’s defense, there have been several media representations of FFVII released since the game itself. This includes the Advent Children film which portrays the aftermath of FFVII, as well as the FFVII remakes still being released on newer consoles.

While it's currently unknown how far the remakes will actually go in the story of the FFVII universe, fans would be thrilled to see it extend into Advent Children and possibly even beyond. Whether Cloud's story is continued in a mainline game or not, he's the series' mascot. Fans can rest assured that he will likely appear as a playable character in games for years to come

Following the resounding success of Final Fantasy VII, its next installment had a lot to prove. While it couldn't hope to reach the level of hype and acclaim its predecessor did, it is still one of the top-selling franchise entries and is often considered one of the best games in the series.

FFVIII continued the futuristic setting introduced in VII while adding a lot of interesting new elements to its storyline and characters. Fans still debate the fate of Final Fantasy VIII's characters to this day, so providing a sequel that follows what really happened may settle once and for all the prevailing questions that still linger in the minds of RPG fans.

7 Final Fantasy XII's World Has Plenty For Subsequent Games To Explore

The heroes from Final Fantasy XII

After XI marked Final Fantasy's first step into the MMO sphere, Final Fantasy XII was a welcome return to form with some interesting new mechanics. The battle system was much more action based, reflecting the MMO style of XI, but the overall setting of XII was more along the lines of Final Fantasy IX.

One of the interesting setpieces in FF XII were its airships. While airships were always an important part of most Final Fantasy lore, they were XII's central focus. This made the world of Ivalice seem even bigger than usual and gave developers a lot of space to expand that world in future titles.

FFVI has received multiple remakes, but the franchise has never continued its actual story. This is a landmark entry in Final Fantasy's history and a sequel would bring old fans and new running to the franchise.

5 Final Fantasy Chronicles Could Reach A Broader Audience

The party protect the vessel in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

Chronicles is one of the most distinctive games in the Final Fantasy franchise and also an extremely enjoyable game to play with friends. While it recently received a mobile release and remake, there were some issues with the newer version that didn’t translate well to online play.

A sequel could revitalize the great concepts that Chronicles started with while also applying all that the franchise has learned through its subsequent MMO releases. If Chronicles or a sequel could get up and running in mobile online play, it could easily become one of the popular games in the series and reach an entirely new demographic in the mobile gaming space.

4 Final Fantasy IV Was Deep Enough To Continue

Final Fantasy IV is lauded as one of the first classic FF games with a greater emphasis on story. IV's characters are also some of the most memorable in the entire franchise. FFIV also was the first game to introduce the infamous ATB battle system which became a big part of the franchise's battles moving on.

In particular, Kain's struggle with his internal demons is immortalized as one of the best examples of character development in any game series. With the depth behind its characters and its influence on Final Fantasy as a whole, IV's world deserves a proper sequel to build upon what the original started.

3 Final Fantasy III's Remake Gave It New Life

Final Fantasy III was a turning point for the franchise as it introduced many gameplay elements that became staples of subsequent games in the series. It introduced the job system and the Evoker class in the same breath. The Evoker was FF's first summoner. It had the ability to call on the first versions of some of the most iconic recurring characters in the franchise, including Ifrit, Shiva and Odin.

While FFIII has already had a remake - including a mobile port - it hasn't received any true sequels. The 3D remake included improved backstories for the Warriors of the Light, so continuing this story further could come naturally now that its characters are more developed.

1 Final Fantasy Was Far From Final

A battle plays out in Final Fantasy for NES

When Square first started developing Final Fantasy as Hironobu Sakaguchi's dream project, the company was near bankruptcy. Sakaguchi had decided to go back to school and give up making RPGs if the game failed. He named the game Final Fantasy since he thought it was the end of his career.

Final Fantasy's first game is the quintessential high-fantasy RPG experience and one of the best RPGs on the SNES system. A sequel taking its simple-yet-deep gameplay to a new generation would provide a great reflection on how far the franchise has come since it first made its creator's dreams a reality.
