When most people think of the Final Fantasy franchise, they think of spiky-haired protagonists, enormous swords, and deep, dramatic plots to save the world from great evil. Humor isn't what immediately springs to mind. Despite this, the series is usually considered to be really quite funny, with all of the games including comedy.

Even the darkest games in the Final Fantasy franchise take time out from their bleakness to inject humor into proceedings, with many characters getting in on the act. Nonetheless, there are some characters from the games who stand out above the others for their humor. Even if not specifically comic relief characters, these few supply more laughs than most.

7 Vaan's Oblivious Nature Creates A Lot Of Social Humor

Tying in with Final Fantasy XII's nature as a more contentious game than many in the series, Vaan is one of the series' less popular protagonists, being viewed as overexposed and much less interesting than many of the rest of the party. While he is not the most engaging protagonist of the series, he is one of the funnier.

Vaan's humor largely stems from his upbringing as a war orphan, with little concept of social niceties and limited knowledge of the world around him. As such, Vaan is often unintentionally inappropriate, creating many 'cringe comedy' situations that run throughout the game.

6 Zidane Has Seriously Skewed Priorities

Zidane is the protagonist of Final Fantasy IX and an entirely incorrigible flirt. Despite IX's serious and dramatic story, Zidane is often ready with a joke or a flirtatious comment. What makes this funny rather than grating is that he is also one of the most genuinely warm and friendly protagonists in the series compared to many of his sullen and dramatic contemporaries.

Furthermore, as the game goes on, Zidane's flirtatious nature hits a snag when he develops genuine feelings for his companion, Dagger, and begins to adopt all of the qualities of a lovesick puppy around her. Peaking when the two have to get married as a formality, Zidane's priorities and humor create an entertaining balance to the drama of the game's plot.

5 Yuffie Is Self-Centered And Somewhat Amoral

Yuffie Kirasagi as she appears in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

In Final Fantasy VII, Yuffie is an optional party member who is initially recruited when she tries to steal Materia from Cloud and his party, a well-known thief in the area. Much of Yuffie's comedy comes from her personality, which is cocky and selfish, almost to the point of obnoxiousness.

Nonetheless, Yuffie manages to stay on the right side of charming with her quick wit, legitimately sympathetic motivations, and her development as she grows closer to the party. Nonetheless, her attitude and her boasting lead to plenty of funny scenes in the intervening time. Yuffie has yet to join up in Remake proper, but fans are excited to see what comes of her when she does.

4 Ignis Has A Desert-Dry Wit

Ignis Scientia as he appears in Final Fantasy XV game

For much of its plot, Final Fantasy XV is a road trip between four friends as Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum travels to his wedding. Early chapters are light-hearted and full of many types of comedy, with each of the cast getting in their moments of humor.

Nonetheless, the funniest is Noctis's aide, Ignis Scientia. As the de-facto parent of the group, he takes on the responsibility of keeping the others fed, safe, and on track, and he frequently grows exasperated. Rather than shout, however, Ignis makes his feelings known with the most deadpan of humor, lovingly cutting down his friends with a few choice words and earning his fair share of laughs.

3 Lulu's Lack Of Smiles Hides Her Humor

One of Yuna's guardians in Final Fantasy X, Lulu initially appears to be the un-funny type. She hardly ever smiles and is notedly cynical, moody, coldly logical, and unafraid to tell people the truth. In contrast to her brighter and more lively companions, she appears somewhat dour.

However, as Lulu grows more comfortable with Tidus, more of her true personality begins to bleed through. While still reserved and cynical, Lulu also proves herself to be sarcastic and witty, amusing herself several times in conversations with others. In particular, she will even return the favor if Tidus attempts to flirt with her before noting, "good luck, little boy."

2 Hildibrand's Competence And Comedy Are Complete Opposites

Hildibrand Helidor Maximilian Manderville as he appears in Final Fantasy XIV

The 'incompetent detective' is a periodically-used comedic device in fiction. The 'incompetent detective' is a man — often posh — who believes themselves to be a Sherlock Holmes-esque genius when in reality, they are at best average and often incompetent. In Final Fantasy XIV, Hildibrand Helidor Maximilian Manderville is a recurring example of this trope.

Describing himself as 'the Gentleman of Light,' Hildibrand believes himself to be an extraordinary inquisitor and detective, able to solve any crime. In reality, everyone can tell that he is incompetent and prone to making matters worse. Nonetheless, his genuine, well-meaning nature and frequent recurrence have turned him into one of XIV's most popular NPCs.

1 Ultros Is A Silly And Harmless Boss

Ultros losing a fight to the party in Final Fantasy XIII-2

The boss fights of Final Fantasy are typically deeply serious affairs. Culminations of plotlines and often happening immediately before or after significant story beats. They are usually major events, without much in the way of comedy.

Ultros is a recurring boss throughout multiple Final Fantasy games who is none of that. Largely irrelevant to the story, Ultros appears because he likes to make himself a nuisance and accompanies his presence with corny jokes and lecherous lines. Although his attitude towards female characters has not aged well, his melodrama, harmlessness, and pointless recurring antagonism have led many players to look on him fondly.
