Part of the intense buzz surrounding the upcoming Harley Quinn-led movie, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), involves the gorgeous costumes revealed in the trailers, stills and posters. Although they might seem like nothing fans have ever seen before, the costumes draw inspiration from the cult film, Fight Club.

“When we first spoke a lot of her inspiration were films that feel like a heightened version of reality that can also exist in a world that isn’t too jarring, or you don’t disassociate yourself with immediately," Birds of Prey costume designer Erin Benach told Collider about her discussions with star Margot Robbie. "Like Fight Club, for example, is something that she mentioned, and you’re like, 'Oh, I’m pretty sure they all dress normal,' but then you look at a snapshot of Fight Club, and Brad Pitt’s wearing a flowery, pink bathrobe. It is quite out there and bright and colorful and strange, but it does feel grounded at the same time. So I guess it’s a combination of achieving a heightened reality that feels grounded and recognizable at the same time and also distinctly from a female perspective.”

Benach also designed costumes for Drive, The Neon Demon and A Star is Born, and collaborated with Robbie on the general vibe of the Birds of Prey costumes. Some of the more memorable outfits from the film include a glittery, caution tape jacket, a t-shirt that reads "Harley F*cking Quinn" and a full-length sequin and velvet jacket. Although Benach didn't pull directly from David Fincher's 1999 dystopian film, you can see how Harley's Gotham (and wardrobe) might nod to it in the film.

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig. The film is scheduled for release on Feb. 7, 2020.
