The Final Fantasy VII Remake project is expanding with the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and a remake of the cult classic prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, but audiences shouldn't expect remakes of the game's other spinoffs any time soon.Speaking with Famitsu, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura and producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that there are currently no plans to remake Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII or Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus were, like Crisis Core, two major titles in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, a multimedia series which built out the world of FInal Fantasy VII.RELATED: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion Features Changes to its Iconic Battle System

When Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion was announced, hopeful fans expressed enthusiasm about a potential remake of Dirge of Cerberus. While a remake of the title is not in development, Nomura clarified that staff members working on the Final Fantasy VII Remake project are interested in exploring the title in the future. Dirge of Cerberus is a follow-up to the original Final Fantasy VII, eschewing that game's turn-based combat in favor of a third-person shooting system built around FFVII party member Vincent Valentine's skill set. The game released on PlayStation 2 to lukewarm critical reception.

Before Crisis is a slightly different story. The game, a prequel to FFVII focused on the Turks, was warmly received by critics and fans for its gameplay, narrative and visuals. However, because the game was developed for several Japanese mobile phone services, it never made its way to the United States, and it has never been officially translated.

While Dirge of Cerberus and Before Crisis don't have dedicated remakes in development, the upcoming mobile game Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is expected to adapt many stories from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series. According to Nomura, Ever Crisis will also tell new stories in the world of FFVII, including one which will feature a young Sephiroth.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is available on PlayStation 4. The upgraded Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is available on PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Windows. For those who are still itching to experience the stories of Dirge of Cerberus and Before Crisis once more, the closed beta for Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is expected later in 2022 on Android and iOS devices. The next title in the Remake series, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will release in 2023, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
