Given the dearth of exclusive games to play, anyone lucky enough to acquire a PlayStation 5 will likely want to pick up where they left off in their PlayStation 4 games. That's especially true in games as robust as Final Fantasy VII Remake. Anyone who wants to experience the new content, such as the Yuffie campaign, in addition to the already substantial PlayStation 4 version without losing their data will need to transfer their save.

Unfortunately, save transfers haven't proven to be that easy for Sony consoles. While Microsoft's Smart Delivery has made the transition between generations fairly simple, PlayStation owners have found themselves having to jump through hoops to get their save files where they need to be and in the correct format. To that end, this guide will help you get your save transferred and imported, as well as offer troubleshooting tips should something go wrong. With a bit of luck, you should be picking up your last playthrough of Cloud and his party's adventures in Midgar in no time.

The first thing PS4 owners need to do is to make sure their PlayStation Plus membership is current, which allows you to transfer Cloud Saves from the network to your console. Then, press the options button on FF VII Remake and select upload/download data, then specify the saved data you want to be uploaded. On your PS5, navigate to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4), then go to Cloud Storage > Download to Console Storage, select FFVII Remake and hit Download to copy your existing PS4 save to your PS5.

If you'd rather transfer the data outside of the cloud, make sure both consoles are connected to the same network using WiFi or LAN cables and both are running the latest firmware. On the PS5, navigate to Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue. Select the PS4 you want to transfer data from. When the PS5 displays the notice Prepare for Data Transfer, press and hold the power button on your PS4 until you hear a beep. Returning to the PS5, select the data you want to transfer, then select Start TransferThe PS5 will automatically restart during transfer. Once the restart has been completed, you can now use your PS5 with PS4 saves.

When using a PS4 External HDD, make sure that all the data you want to use on it is present. This includes PS4 game installs and saves. Turn off your PS4, disconnect the external HDD, connect the external HDD to your PS5, then turn on your PS5. Wait 5-10 minutes (the PS5 needs to process all of the data contained in the HDD). On the PS5, navigate to Settings > Storage > Extended Storage, then go into Games and AppsYou’ll see all your PS4 installs. Go into Saved Data and the PS5 will ask you which copy you wish to delete.

When using a USB drive, you need to insert the drive into the port on the back of your PS4 console. From there, go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data In System StorageGo into Copy to USB Storage Device, then select your file. Once it's copied, remove the USB from the PS4 and insert it into the port on the PS5's rear. On PS5, navigate to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4). Go into USB Drive > Copy to Console Storage, select the PS4 games to copy save data, and select copy. The PS4 save files will now copy across. When completed, you can use them with the PS4 games on PS5.

None of these methods are foolproof. If you're using wi-fi, it's worth trying to connect your consoles via a wired connection or Ethernet cables. If your router is giving you trouble, turn it off for 5-10 minutes and turn it on again. You can retry transferring your data by going to Setting > System > System Software > Data Transfer. Sony's best practice for save transfer is switching to an alternative storage method. Additionally, don't use the Network Test feature or rest mode while transferring data. If problems persist, put both consoles into Safe Mode and update your software. If that doesn’t help, reboot in Safe Mode and Restore Default Settings on PS5. You can also return to Safe Mode and Rebuild Your Database

When preparing for your data transfer, make sure the PS4 and PS5 are signed in to the same account, update your system software to the latest version, and make sure your trophy information is synchronized. Press the Options button, then Sync with PlayStation Network. If none of that works, contact PlayStation Support immediately or look into getting the less demanding PC version.
