Final Fantasy VII Remake released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive in 2020, about five years after its initial reveal. Billed as a ground-up reimagining of the 1997 classic, the title only ended up adapting the first of Final Fantasy VII's iconic three discs. The remainder of the story will be told in subsequent parts.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake series is directed by Tetsuya Nomura. Nomura has a deep personal history with Final Fantasy VII as the character designer and co-writer of the original game. He also co-directed the film follow-up, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, with Takeshi Nozue. Nomura also worked on many of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII spinoff titles. While he's been overseeing Cloud Strife and his friends for decades, even making sure to give Final Fantasy VII characters a special focus in his own Kingdom Hearts series, Final Fantasy VII Remake represents his most involved role yet.

Final Fantasy VII Remake has been a springboard for a number of new titles in the Final Fantasy VII universe. A side-story titled INTERmission, released as DLC for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the game's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Windows release, outlined some of the adventures of fan-favorite party member Yuffie Kisaragi. A mobile-only battle royale game titled Final Fantasy VII: The First SOLDIER is fairly plot-light but takes place a few years before the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Another mobile-only title, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, is intended to retell the events of the original Final Fantasy VII and the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII titles. Elsewhere in the Final Fantasy universe, a trailer was recently released for Final Fantasy XVI. News has been fairly forthcoming about the title since then. Co-directed by first-time Final Fantasy directors Hiroshi Takai and Kazutoyo Maehiro and produced by Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida, the game is set to release in Summer 2023. Like Final Fantasy VII Remake, it will feature flashy, action-forward combat rather than the turn-based systems of Final Fantasy's past.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 will release on PlayStation 5 on sometime in Winter 2023. Final Fantasy VII Remake is currently available on PlayStation 4, while the enhanced Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade is available on PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Windows.
