Fear the Walking Dead showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg opened up about Madison Clark’s story arc in the upcoming Season 8 of AMC’s first The Walking Dead spinoff.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, Chambliss and Goldberg discussed their plans to reinvent Kim Dickens’ fan-favorite character Madison Clark by showing viewers a never-before-seen side of her, different from the heroic mother she was in Fear the Walking Dead Season 4. "First and foremost, this had to be a side of Madison Clark we’ve never seen before; this is a reinvention," Goldberg explained. "To see her in this completely different situation, where she’s actually ripping families apart, is something that we really leaned into."

Kim Dickens’ Madison Clark is one of the original main characters from Season 1 who has survived throughout Fear the Walking Dead’s run. Before her apparent "death" in Season 4, she was introduced as a guidance counselor and overbearing mother to Frank Dillane’s Nick and Alycia Debnam-Carey’s Alicia Clark. She can be capable of ruthlessness for her loved ones' sakes, which was shown during her long-awaited return in the Season 7 finale when it was revealed that she kidnapped children for PADRE in exchange for assistance in her search for Nick and Alicia.

The Final Season Will Explore Madison Clark’s Dark Turn

Chambliss and Goldberg confirmed that Fear the Walking Dead Season 8 will explore the reasons behind Madison’s dark turn as she struggles to move past her mistakes. "Madison is left at this really dark night of the soul," Goldberg said. "She’s done a lot of things that she now regrets working for PADRE. It’s something that we’re going to see her really wrestle with in season eight. It’s not going to be an easy road for her to walk in season eight. It’s very much about her identity, who she is, what she believes in."

Chambliss revealed that Madison’s difficult path towards redemption and reclaiming her identity will resonate throughout the final season, as "it plays into a theme that’s going to be very important in season eight," which is the significance of one’s legacy. "In the case of Madison, it lived alongside her as she was descending down a darker path," he said. "Those are some things that we’re going to play with."

Earlier this year, AMC announced that Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, which will be divided into two six-episode parts, will serve as the horror drama’s final installment. In addition to Dickens, the final season will also star Lennie James as Morgan Jones, Colman Domingo as Victor Strand, Austin Amelio as Dwight, Danay Garcia as Luciana Galvez, Jenna Elfman as June Dorie and Rubén Blades as Daniel Salazar.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Part 1 will be airing on AMC on May 14.
