The second season of AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" premiered Sunday to 6.7 million total viewers, with 3.9 million in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic. That's down 3 percent in the overall audience, and 9 percent in the demo, from the Season 5 finale.

Comparing Sunday's episode to last year's record-breaking series premiere, Deadline notes the "Walking Dead" companion series dropped 34 percent in total viewers and 37 percent in the key demo. Still, "Fear the Walking Dead" was the top show on television that night in the 18-49 demo.

The drama, which shifts settings this season from Los Angeles to the open sea, faced serious competition Sunday from the MTV Movie Awards and an NBA game.

Expect Live+3 numbers from AMC on Friday.

"Fear the Walking Dead" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
