WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the Fear The Walking Dead episode "Good Out Here," which aired on Sunday, April 29 on AMC.
As Fear The Walking Dead kills off another of its central characters, reports have emerged that Frank Dillane asked to leave the show to pursue other opportunities.
In the dramatic April 29 episode "Good Out Here," audiences waved goodbye to Dillane's Nick Clark. Nick has been a major part of the cast since appearing in 2015's series premiere, but just like sister show The Walking Dead, new showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg proved that no one is safe in the zombie apocalypse.
Offering one of the show's biggest twists to date, Nick's demise seemingly came from nowhere. However, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Chambliss and Goldberg revealed that Dillane had wanted off AMC's show since last season.
"It actually goes back to season three, before Ian and I even came aboard," Chambliss said. "Frank Dillane had asked the producers and AMC if he could leave the show, because he wanted to pursue other opportunities. One of the first things we were tasked with when we came on to run season four was to really find a story that would give Nick a fitting sendoff."
Just like the shock demise of Cliff Curtis' Travis Manawa in Season 3, Nick's death came completely out of the blue. Occurring just three episodes into the "revamped" era of the show following a major time jump and crossover of Lennie James as Morgan, many fans had no idea that Nick would be the next to shuffle off into an early grave.
"He was really receptive when we pitched him our idea for how he was going to close out Nick's story," Goldberg said. "We think he played it beautifully."
Considering that Fear The Walking Dead opened with Nick and that Dillane became a major part of the marketing material, his absence will undoubtedly leave a hole in Chambliss and Goldberg's show. However, given that Season 4 is still flipping between dual timelines, audiences are promised plenty more of Dillane's reformed drug addict before the series is out.
Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC. The show stars Kim Dickens as Madison Clark, Frank Dillane as Nick Clark, Alycia Debnam Carey as Alicia, Coleman Domingo as Victor Strand, Danay Garcia as Luciana, Jenna Elfman as Naomi, Maggie Grace as Althea, Garret Dillahunt as John Dorie, Evan Gamble as Ennis, Alexa Nisenson as Charlie and Lennie James as Morgan Jones.
