FCBD | Two in Texas, two in California

If I'm to believe the little kid on the home page of the Free Comic Book Day website (and I have no reason to doubt him; he is dressed like Batman, after all) then Free Comic Book Day is just 10 days away. Comic shops all over the world will be giving away free comics on May 2; find out what you can get for free here .

Many retailers will host special events and signings on Free Comic Book Day, which I'll collect and post right here at Robot 6. Today's update contains details on events in the Lone Star State, specifically Austin and Lubbock, as well as Concord and Winnetka, Calif. (My state of origin and my state of current whereabouts).

If you’re a creator or retailer involved with or hosting a FCBD event, please drop me a note about your plans, as we’ll start posting them between now and May 2.

Retailer Randy Lander and Love and Capes creator Thom Zahler dropped me a note about this signing at Rogues Gallery Comics and Games in Round Rock, Texas (just a fe wmiles north of the greatest city in the world, Austin. Here's what Randy sent:

As usual, Rogues Gallery Comics and Games in Round Rock, Texas is throwing a big old free comics party for Free Comic Book Day.

We’ll have the full selection of free comic books, of course, and Free Comic Book Day balloons that we’re happy to hand out to any kids who want them.

In addition, we’ll have guests in attendance! Thom Zahler (Love & Capes) will be signing for most of the day, Alan Porter (Pixar/Boom! World of Cars) will be signing from 11 AM - 1 PM, and Paul Benjamin (Pantheon High, Marvel Adventures Hulk, upcoming: Monsters Inc.) will be there as well!

Both Alan and Thom will have new issues of their comics available among the Free Comic Book Day selections.

In Lubbock, May 2 brings the second annual Lubbock Comic Book Expo. Scott Slemmons sent over some details:

I thought I'd pass the word along that May 2 in Lubbock, Texas marks the date of the second annual Lubbock Comic Book Expo.

Last year, in our very first year, we had attendance of exactly 777 people, which was a lot more than we were expecting. We're expecting even more this year, because the Expo is being held in the Lubbock Memorail Civic Center in conjunction with the Lubbock Arts Festival, which has been going on for about 30 years. This could end up bringing a couple thousand people through the doors, and we're all very excited about the event.

The Comic Expo is organized by the folks at Lubbock's Star Comics and the Lubbock Sketch Club, which is building up a growing membership of really talented and passionate artists. I'm not a member (I just can't draw at all), but I'm always pretty amazed at the artwork they create.

Image's Joe Keatinge dropped me a note about this event in the Bay Area, at Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff in Concord:

Free Comic Book Day, the worldwide event with origins in Concord CA will be celebrated Saturday May 2 from 11am-7pm at Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff in Concord CA. Nearly 2000 other comic book specialty stores in all 50 United States and more than 30 other countries will also participate. Readers of all ages and interests are invited to visit participating stores to receive special edition comics absolutely free of charge. The event was created by Concord CA comics’ retailer Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff as a way to interest new readers, call back former comic book fans and thank current comic book readers while highlighting the comics’ medium’s rich diversity. Featured guests at the Flying Colors event are:

  • GLEN BRUNSWICK, writer of Image Comics’ JERSEY GODS series, as well as GRAY AREA and KILLING GIRL, also from Image. Brunswick is a Hollywood veteran and was co-writer of the Dennis Quaid/Jim Caviezel movie FREQUENCY.
  • LANDRY WALKER & ERIC JONES, the creative team from SUPERGIRL: COSMIC ADVENURES IN THE 8TH GRADE from DC Comics, as well LITTLE GLOOMY from Slave Labor Graphics.

"Look around you and see how much comics have seeped into our culture," says Field. "Movies, TV and video games pull their blockbuster ideas from comics and graphic novels, so I invite everyone to get in on the action. Flying Colors will have thousands of free comics waiting to be devoured by new and returning readers….and our free edition of JERSEY GODS is an exclusive to our event here in Concord." Since May 2002 more than 15 million comics have been given away to first-time comic shop visitors, returning readers and long-time fans at Free Comic Book Day events all over the world.
