With "The Fate of the Furious" expected to rake in a whopping $380 million globally in its opening weekend, the eighth installment in the "Fast and the Furious" franchise was pumped up with a hefty dose of nitrous oxide in the form of $10.4 million domestically at the Thursday box office.

The earnings come from 3,310 theaters, with showings starting at 7 PM. However, "The Fate of the Furious" still manages to fall short of its predecessor, "Furious 7," which pulled in a massive $15.8 million at the Thursday previews back in 2015. The true test of whether or not the franchise still has enough gas in the tank, though, will be whether or not it can break "Furious 7's" franchise-record $147 million domestic opening weekend.

Directed by F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton,” “The Italian Job”), the film stars returning franchise veterans Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell, joined by newcomers Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren. “The Fate of the Furious” is now in theaters nationwide.
