The first trailer for “The Fate of the Furious” has raced past its competition, surpassing “Beauty and the Beast” for the most views in the first 24 hours.
Deadline reports the trailer pulled in 139M views, beating “Beauty and the Beast’s” record of 127.6M. Many factors aided “The Fate of the Furious” in gaining the top spot, including Universal debuting it in Times Square with cast members Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and more on hand to hype its arrival along with director F. Gary Gray. The Big Kahuna billboard, the largest digital screen in the United States, was one of 33 digital billboards across Manhattan to air the trailer.
Other factors that played into the trailer’s popularity included a Facebook live stream that was promoted days before the trailer’s release, and the premiere airing on NBC’s “Football Night in America” pre-game show for the NFL matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. The primetime event drew 26.7M viewers, making it the most-watched NFL game of the season.
Directed by F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton,” “The Italian Job”), the film stars returning franchise veterans Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell, joined by newcomers Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren. “The Fate of the Furious” opens April 14, 2017.
