While the next main installment of the Fast & Furious franchise may be delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, development is moving forward on a sequel to 2019's spinoff film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

"We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I'm pretty excited about it," Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson said during an Instagram Q&A. "[We] just gotta figure out the creative [team] right now, and the direction we’re going to go."

While Hobbs & Shaw faced a more mixed critical reception compared to the main film series' recent installments, the spinoff earned $759.06 million at the worldwide box office.

Due to the global health crisis, F9 -- the franchise's next film -- has been delayed from its intended May release date to April 2021. While Johnson previously denied that he would be in the project, he has since hinted at his character's eventual return to the main series to resolve unfinished with protagonist Dom Toretto.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel and Sung Kang, with Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron and Cardi B. The film arrives in theaters April 2, 2021.
