Jordana Brewster's Mia Toretto was nowhere to be seen 2017's The Fate of the Furious, tying in with the franchise's handling of the tragic passing of mainstay Paul Walker in 2013. However, according to star Vin Diesel, Brewster will be returning to the long-running franchise for the ninth installment, scheduled for release in 2020.
Diesel confirmed to Access that Mia Toretto will be brought back to the franchise in Fast & Furious 9 while promoting the new Fast and Furious ride at Universal Studios in Orlando. "They asked me specifically, please do not divulge what happens in 9," Diesel said. "But I get so excited... and I start talking about it out of excitement. It's like spilling the beans."
"I can say there are a few locations we've been wanting to travel, and one of them is Africa...." Diesel continued. "The thing I'm most excited about is the fact that we are finally going to catch up to Mia Toretto in the ninth chapter. And I'm sure if you're smart, you can tell what all of that implies. It's a very positive component to this next one."
Universal has ordered two more films to conclude The Fast and Furious franchise, with both set to be directed by Justin Lin, who has previously directed four of the eight films in the franchise. The ninth installment has a targeted release date of April 10, 2020.
