Universal’s “The Fast and the Furious” franchise showed no signs of slowing down at the box office this weekend, with the latest film in the series expected to bring in about $122 million domestically over the four-day weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Fast & Furious 6” also brought in $158 million internationally, for a worldwide total of more than $280 million through Monday. Costing $160 million to make, the sixth movie in the franchise stars Van Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Gina Carano, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez.
“Fast 6” opened strong against “The Hangover III,” which is expected to make more than $53 million over the four-day weekend. Last week’s No. 1 movie, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” is projected to come in third this weekend, with an estimated four-day gross of $48 million. Fox’s animated film “Epic” is predicted to land in the No. 4 spot with $44 million, while “Iron Man 3” is expected to land at No. 5 with an estimated $24.6 million. The latest Marvel film has earned $1.14 billion worldwide to become the No. 5 grossing film of all time.
It was a busy weekend at the movies, with domestic four-day totals hitting an estimated $315 million for the industry and setting a new record for biggest Memorial Day weekend at the box office. The previous record, according to Variety, was 2011â€²s Memorial Day weekend of $296 million.
