Fast Color is headed to the small screen as Viola Davis looks to develop the film into a series along with her husband, Julius Tennon, as part of their JuVee Productions banner for Amazon Studios.

According to Deadline, the series will also include the Fast Color movie writers Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz, who will also produce through their Mickey Liddell’s LD Entertainment. Hart co-wrote and directed the feature, which debuted to critical acclaim last year. The film starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint and Saniyya Sidney in a story that focused on three generations of black women and the superhuman abilities they possess.

“Since the day we premiered at SXSW, there has been an incredible outpouring of grassroots support for this film,” Hart said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to continue living in this world, with these women, and can’t imagine better partners than Viola and Julius and Mickey and Pete and everyone at Amazon.”

The television series will follow the character Ruth, a former drug addict and runaway, as she returns home to find that the superpowers she believed to have vanished are now back, along with her needing to find a way to continue to keep them a secret. Ruth will connect with her mother and daughter throughout the series, as they begin to learn more about who they are and the generations of women that came before them.

Hart will co-write the script with Horowitz, who will return to helm the pilot.
