Michael Fassbender may be entering “First Class.” According to Heat Vision the actor is in early negotiations to play Magneto in the new film. Reports surfaced last week that the actor was a person of interest both for Magneto and the unnamed villain in Sony’s “Spider-Man” reboot. The other role could still be in play. “The real question here is, how badly does Columbia want Fassbender as their villain? Could Columbia make an aggressive play for the actor?” asks the article.
Magneto was played by Ian McKellan in the previous “X-Men” series opposite Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier. The character became a highlight of the first film; prompting Twentieth Century Fox to develop a solo feature exploring the character’s origins. That effort eventually gave way to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “First Class.” The film will cover the early days of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and presumably focus on the original X-Men, though it is currently unclear how the film will sync up with the “First Class” premise glimpsed in “Wolverine.”
Fassbender is known for his work as Archie Hicox in “Inglorious Bastards.” He is no stranger to comic book based films with parts in “Jonah Hex” as Burke, John Malkovich’s right hand man, and “300” as Stelios.
Meanwhile, Showbiz 411 reports actor Benjamin Walker will take on the role of Henry McCoy, aka, the Beast. Walker is the star of the Public Theater’s “Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson.” His commitments to “Andrew Jackson” could cause a scheduling snarl.
If everything goes smoothly, the two actors will join James McAvoy — the new Professor X — in London for an August shoot under the direction of Matthew Vaughn. With the film moving swiftly into production, expect the rest of the cast to be announced quickly.
