Fassbender In Talks To Play Magneto In X-Men: First Class

No sooner do we mention Michael Fassbender and X-Men: First Class than Hollywood Insider reports the 33-year-old actor is in negotiations to play Erik Lensherr, aka Magneto, in the reboot of Fox's mutant franchise.

The news comes as little surprise, obviously, considering a report surfaced last week that the Inglourious Basterds co-star was being courted by Sony/Columbia for the Spider-Man reboot and by Fox for First Class. This would be Fassbender's third comic-book adaptation, following 2006's 300 and Jonah Hex, which opens this weekend.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake), First Class stars James McAvoy as a young Charles Xavier in a story that centers on his relationship with Lensherr as they discover their fledgling mutant abilities and work together to stop a global threat. As we noted earlier, Benjamin Walker reportedly has been cast as Hank McCoy (aka the Beast).

Production is set to begin this summer in London. X-Men: First Class opens on June 3, 2011.
