Far From Home Trailer Reportedly Changes Spider-Man/Mysterio Dynamic

While fans did not get the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home today outside of Brazil Comic Con, the footage shown at the convention teased at a much different dynamic between the webslinger and his longtime antagonist Mysterio, confirmed at the film's panel by its cast.

As part of Sony's panel at Brazil Comic Con, footage from the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film was unveiled followed by appearances by cast members Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jacob Batalon confirming that Mysterio which actually be working directly with Spider-Man in the film, at the least at first, for Nick Fury to take on a new threat known as Elementals.

"There are these threats to the world. Elementals. Elemental creatures. And Mysterio is someone who knows about them, and wants to make sure the world is safe from them. And Nick Fury asks him to come on and help, because he's the only one who really sort of understands them," explained Gyllenhaal at the panel. "He teams up with friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and unfortunately, he has to make him more than just friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."

With the wide release of the trailer delayed for the immediate future, the panel and footage description is all fans outside of the convention will have to go on in the interim. The news does mark a drastic reimagining between the two Marvel characters' traditional combative dynamic, however, as well as introduce a new threat to the MCU that brings the two together under Fury's orders. "This character Mysterio, when they showed it to me, was so original," Gyllenhaal continued. "the idea of who he is and why he's there is so original and so special, I was like 'Man, they did it again.' I didn't think [Sony and Marvel Studios] could, and they do it every time."

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya Coleman, Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Remy Hii, and Tony Revolori. It is scheduled to be released on July 5, 2019.
