Ubisoft has unveiled gameplay of the upcoming Far Cry 6 alongside an official release date.

The live stream provided fans with a closer look at the open-world shooter and showed a game that will no doubt appear familiar to fans of the franchise. Players will step into the boots of revolutionary Dani Rojas, either male or female depending on the player's preference, as they attempt to overthrow the corrupt dictatorship of Yara, a fictional country seemingly drawing inspiration from Cuba. Players will fight in both rural and high-tech environments, using a series of cobbled-together tools and gadgets to dismantle the rule of dictator Antón Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul).

The game's tone seems more tongue-in-cheek than previous entries in the franchise. Some of the equipment shown off in the trailer includes backpack missile launchers, handheld miniguns and a CD player gun that makes deadly use of the "Macarena." The trailer also shows off a flamethrower-jetpack that the player can use to simultaneously boost themselves into the air and burn the environment around them.

Far Cry fans will also note that animal companions have returned for the sixth entry in the franchise. . The trailer showed off a rideable horse that will allow Dani to traverse the gigantic map faster. If players would prefer to drive, they can hop into a variety of customizable cars to travel in style. A wheelchair-bound puppy was also teased at the end of the trailer, but not elaborated on

Beyond the more outrageous elements, Far Cry 6 looks to continue many of the gameplay elements established in previous titles. Players can use a variety of methods to accomplish their goal of destroying the regime. Opting for either a stealthy approach or guns blazing, the briefly shown map is littered with objectives and tasks for players to complete with the end goal of removing Antón Castillo from power.

Announced in July 2020, Far Cry 6 was initially meant to launch in February but was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Fans have speculated that Far Cry 6 will act as a prequel to the beloved Far Cry 3This is due to the fact that Diego Castillo, son of Antón, bears a scar identical to the one seen on Vaas, the iconic villain of the third game.

Far Cry 6 launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Oct. 7, 2021.
