Fantomex is a strange character, even by X-Men standards. He was first created by Grant Morrison and Igor Kordey back in 2002. If you're familiar with Grant Morrison's work at all, you know that nothing is ever standard with the Scottish writer. Everything about this character is just out there; his powers, his origin story, everything.

With an X-Force movie potentially on the way, there's a chance we could see Fantomex on the big screen. In this article, we're going to breakdown 10 things you need to know about the X-Force's most lethal member. This is going to be a wild ride, so hold on tight!

10 Born In 'The World'

First things first, let's talk about Fantomex's origins. Fanto comes from a place called ' The World,' a high tech facility made by the Weapon Plus Program. Located in England, The World is an artificial environment populated by robots and mad scientists. The entire point of the facility is to create superbeings that can hunt down mutants.

Fantomex is one of those beings. Designated Charlie Cluster-7 at birth, Fanto grew up in The World. His creators put him through countless simulations like something out of The Matrix. Charlie never had a family and never really experienced love until he left The World later in life.

9 Weapon Plus

Weapon X Program

As the name implies, the Weapon Plus Program is the follow up to the Weapon X Program. Weapon X's goal was to turn mutants into government killing machines. Weapon Plus, on the other hand, seeks to merge mutants with machines. To be more specific, Weapon Plus works to create a new breed of Super Sentinels by making Sentinel/Mutant hybrids.

In the simplest terms, Fantomex is a part mutant and part Sentinel cyborg. His mutant mother 'mated' with a machine and gave birth to Charlie. As a result of his unconventional lineage, Fanto has a whole host of unusual powers and abilities.

8 Three Brains

Yep, you've read that right - Fantomex has three separate brains. A part of being a half mutant/ half Sentinel hybrid is having strange physiology. Charlie's body is incredibly unique and is only human in the vaguest sense. Fanto's three brains aren't just for show - he can switch between them in times of need. He can also use them to perform certain tasks automatically; Charlie once performed surgery on himself using one of his extra brains.

After his 'death,' Charlie's three brains took over bodies of their own. One brain retained Fantomex's original personality and name. Another became a female assassin named Cluster. The last became an evil version of Fanto with an inverted costume.

7 E.V.A.

If you think it's weird that Fantomex has three brains, wait until you get a load of this. Charlie has an external nervous system. It's controlled by a being called E.V.A. that's linked to Fanto. E.V.A. is an incredibly advanced techno-organic robot. She's completely autonomous and possesses her own thoughts and feelings.

Charlie can have E.V.A. shut off his pain receptors, allowing him to act as if he's immune to damage for a time. When Fantomex died, it was E.V.A. who put his minds in three separate bodies. Later on, E.V.A. eventually evolved and gained a humanoid form of her own.

6 Realistic Illusions

A big part of Fantomex's schtick is deception. Charlie can create incredibly realistic illusions like Mysterio. These illusions are capable of faking out even the sharpest minds in the Marvel Universe. With little effort, Fanto can create illusions so powerful that psychics can't see through them. Charlie proved this early in his career when he met Professor X and Jean Grey.

Fantomex stumbled into the duo after a fight with a dangerous foe. Professor X and Jean tried to read Charlie's mind but they couldn't for some reason. Fanto used his powers of illusion to convince Professor X and Jean to help him. It'd be a while until they learned how Charlie could block their telepathy.

5 Wolverine Has Trouble Tracking Him

Wolverine is the best there is at what he does. And what Wolvie does usually involves tracking and killing people. It's a well-known fact that Wolverine is one of the best trackers and fighters in the Marvel Universe. But even Weapon X is unable to track down a person like Fantomex by scent alone.

It's not for lack of trying, however. Fanto simply possesses a power called 'Inodorosity.' In layman's terms, Charlie's body doesn't emit an odor. Furthermore, Fanto doesn't leave behind a scent of any kind - even when wearing on clothes. Wolverine is a very resourceful man and could likely find a way to track Fanto eventually. But it wouldn't be easy for a number of reasons.

4 Weapon XIII

The Weapon Programs have linked Fantomex and Wolverine together. Weapon X paved the way for Weapon Plus - much of X's successes and failures helped Plus conduct their experiments. Weapon X also incorporated adamantium in their tests, making a few of their subjects virtually indestructible. Weapon Plus learned from this misstep and avoided doing the same.

As a result, Charlie is tough but not impervious to damage. Weapon XIII can heal but not to the degree that Weapon X can. Fantomex isn't susceptible to Magneto's powers either, unlike Wolverine. Fanto also differs from Deadpool in that his three brains aren't constantly shifting and shuffling around.

3 Telepathy Blocking Mask

One of Fantomex's most potent abilities is his resistance to telepathic attacks. When Professor X and Jean Grey tried to read his mind years ago, he was able to resist them thanks to this ability. However, Charlie can't resist telepaths naturally - he owes this potent ability to his mask.

Fanto's mask doesn't just look cool; it can also protect its wearer from psychics. Charlie's mask is lined with ceramic materials. This allows Weapon XIII to repel psychic probes and keep his thoughts to himself. Jean Grey was only able to read Charlie's mind when he briefly had to remove his mask.

2 Romance With Psylocke

Psylocke is a lethal member of the X-Men, the twin sister of Captain Britain, and a core member of the X-Force. During her time with Deadpool and Cable's team, Psylocke met Fantomex for the first time. The two didn't exactly hit things off at first. Well, Psylocke literally hit Charlie a few times but that's not really what we met.

In time, Elizabeth came to like and then love Charlie. The two them started an extremely passionate relationship together. They'd fight, break up, and then make up every other day or so. Their time together came to an end when Charlie first 'died.'

1 Raising Apocalypse

Apocalypse

Apocalypse is one of the meanest, most evil foes the X-Men have ever faced. Fairly recently, the X-Men managed to kill Apocalypse after a brutal battle. Everyone thought that'd be the end of the First Mutant. That was until the X-Force discovered a child-like clone of Apocalypse. After much deliberation, Fantomex killed this clone to prevent another threat from rising.

Later, Fanto introduced the rest of the team to Genisis - another clone of Apocalypse that Charlie essentially raised in The World. The team named Genisis Evan Sabahnur and enrolled him in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Hopefully, Evan can grow into a fully realized hero someday.
