Whether it's elements of magic, new worlds with monsters, or supernatural enemies, these are the series to look out for this spring. With everything going on in the world right now, fantasy might be the genre we all need.

All the anime on this list will start airing during the spring 2020 season. Anime that went live before then and continued airing into spring 2020 will not be counted. Be sure to check into all of the series featured on this list that pique your interest!

10 Not Excited for: Princess Connect: Re:Dive

Kicking off the list is Princess Connect: Re:Drive. Also known as Priconne, this series follows a plot we’ve all probably seen before. The anime follows a main protagonist as he wakes up in a fantasy world without any memories. In this new world he meets Eustiana von Astrea and Kokkoro Natsume, the guild master and member of Gourmet Edifice respectively. Based on a mobile game titled Princess Connect, Princess Connect: Re:Drive will be adapted by CygamesPictures studio.

9 Excited for: Tower of God

Tower of God is not only one of the most anticipated fantasy anime of spring 2020, but across all genres. The anime follows Twenty-Fifth Bam, a boy stuck beneath under a strange tower. When his friend Rachel finds her way in, he sets off on a quest to find her.

At each level of the tower is a different challenge for him. Tower of God is different from most anime as the series will be adapted from a Manhwa (Korean comic). The anime will be adapted by studio Telecom Animation Film.

8 Not Excited for: The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?

The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? follows Shingo Ichinomiya, a 25-year-old man working an everyday job, living an everyday life, until he wakes up in a mysterious room. No longer the 25-year-old man he once was, Shingo is now in a 6 year old’s body who is the child of a noble family. Shingo now possesses magic, but instead of becoming all-powerful, he becomes a detriment to his family. The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? will be adapted by studios Synergy SP and Shin-Ei Animation.

7 Excited for: BNA

One of the big anime expected to break out in 2020 is BNA: Brand New Animal. The anime original features humanoid animals living in the 21st century. Michiru Kagemori is a high school tanuki (Racoon dog) humanoid student, living in Anima City.

After she meets Shirou Ogami, she investigates what caused her to become a tanuki. This turns out not to be a simple question as she sets on a quest searching for answers. BNA will be adapted by studio Trigger.

6 Not Excited for: Shadowverse

Shadowverse made its popularity through being a card game and is now getting an anime adaptation. The game originally had animated shorts made for it back in 2015 and is now getting a full-fledged series. While not many details have been released about its anime adaptation, the series looks like it will be an advertisement for the game. Characters can be seen playing Shadowverse in the preview. Shadowverse will be adapted by studio Zexcs.

5 Excited for: Hamefura: My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom

Hamefura: My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom takes a female lead in Katarina Claes. Katarina once lived a normal life and was obsessed with the otome game, Fortune Lover. After a fatal accident, she is transported into the world of Fortune Lover with amnesia.

Thanks to hitting her head on a rock she remembers her past life and realizes she is now in a new world as the villainess of Fortune Lover. If fate continues, she will be set to die, but thanks to her obsessive knowledge over the game, she looks to rewrite her intended route. Hamefura: My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom will be adapted by studio Silver Link.

4 Not Excited for: Sachibato! President, It’s Time for Battle

Spring 2020 looks to be the season of anime based on games. Sachibato! President, It’s Time for Battle is based on a strategy RPG game. The series takes place in a fantasy world where the player is the president. As president, their job is to recruit adventurers to join their party. The group will then explore different dungeons facing challenges and earning rewards. Sachibato! President, It’s Time for Battle will be adapted by studio C2C.

3 Excited for: Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2

The first sequel series on this list, Ascendance of a Bookworm returns for part two of its series. The series comes as a break from the standard overpowered isekai anime titles that have been ever so popular. Urano Motosu is simply a girl who loves to read.

She wants to become a librarian so she can read endlessly but is killed in an accident. Reincarnated as Myne, she is now in a world where the printing press hasn’t been invented yet. Determined to read more books, Myne works to create books herself. Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2 will be adapted by studio Ajia-Do.

2 Not Excited for: Bungou to Alchemist: Shinpan no Haguruma

If you haven’t heard anything about Bungou to Alchemist: Shinpan no Hauruma, you’re probably expecting a big anime crossover between Bungou Stray Dogs and the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise. However, this anime has nothing to do with either. The anime is instead based on a game where the player is in a fantasy world. In this world the player meets famous Japanese historical writers that join your team. Together with these famous writers the player purifies books, learning their secrets and unlocking abilities. Bungou to Alchemist: Shinpan no Hauruma will be adapted by studio OLM.

1 Excited for: Sword Art Online Alicization – War of Underworld 2nd Season

Rounding out the list is the most popular anime of this season. Sword Art Online is back to air the sequel to the Alicization – World of Underworld season. Alicization was praised by some as one of the best seasons of Sword Art Online, and was followed up by the War of the Underworld season. Kazuto Kirigaya, better known as Kirito, and Asuna Yuuki hit screens once again as a sequel to the War of Underworld arc. Sword Art Online Alicization – War of Underworld 2nd Season will be adapted by A-1 Pictures studio.
